Kingston Restaurant & Bar

Discover Kingston

Kingston, a Jamaican and Caribbean restaurant and bar is the only authentic Caribbean dining experience located in Harlem, the most diverse part of New York City.  Kingston creates a euphoric feeling of nostalgia for a caribbean lax, calm and tranquil vacation with the music, energy and food offered which provides an escape from the fast paced New York City.  The menu items are traditional Jamaican and Caribbean meals and beverages with a contemporary flare designed to appeal to an International market but still maintaining all crucial taste buds and flavors.
Undeniably Caribbean culture, food and music has been impactful globally, regionally and locally. However, there are no Caribbean restaurant and or barwith a complete experience present in the area.  But instead elements of the culture were easily modified and copied in so many restaurants. Kingston creates something offering a truly authentic experience.

o-owners David Dembele and Kabine Sakho, hail from the Ivory Coast and Guinea respectively. Frustrated with the lack of good food they could get while driving taxis in New York City, they started the restaurant five years ago. Named after the region in the northern part of the Ivory Coast, La Savane serves delicious regional food from both the northern and southern regions of the Ivory Coast, as well as from Mali and Guinea.

Foutou, made from plantains, at La Savane

Foutou, made from plantains, at La Savane

A warm, dark, yellow mound arrives at our table. Foutou is a delicious, slightly sweet dish made with plantain flour. Eaten with your hands, foutou comes from the southern part of the Ivory Coast.
I am also enjoying the chicken in sauce gombo, a tomato-based sauce made with fresh okra, red and green peppers, and spices. The chicken is moist and tender. Paired with the atieke, a couscous-like vegetable made with cassava, the combination is exquisite. Made only in the Ivory Coast, the atieke is pounded until soft, pressed to get all the liquid out, and then steamed. Voila! You have a delectable side dish.

The poisson grille (grilled tilapia), is served with a refreshing tomato, pepper and onion salad. Light and flavorful, the fish is delectable and cooked to perfection.
Other regional specialties made here include the kabato, corn flour mixed with water, and formed into a ball. (A woman walked into the restaurant today specifically looking for the kabato; when she found out they didn’t make any that day, she left.) There is sauce djoumbele, made with tomato and dried okra; ragout aubergine (stewed eggplant); placaly (cassava); gigot (lamb shank); dibi poulet(grilled chicken); rice dishes, and other delicacies.

I plan on eating here again, as there are plenty of wonderful options, and where everything I had was incredible. There’s no need for dessert after you’ve eaten, as you will be quite full. No matter what you order here, you can’t go wrong.

GENERAL TCHEFARY

     BIOGRAPHY

General Tchefary is a descendant of the great opponent of the struggle against French colonialism in Africa “l’Almamy Samory Toure “.  Growing up with his mother, he never saw his father.  Becoming a musician kept him away from the bandits and out of trouble.

Ibrahim Toure alias General Tchefary met his music in West Africa, Ivory Coast in the year 1998.

As an artist, he started in the hip-hop movement then gradually deflected in the life of Reggae music.  He chose Reggae music for what it stands for.  Reggae music is his life; it gives him the joy of living.  It gives him hope to see a better world where people live in harmony without injustice.  Because of this way of life, he and Reggae music have become one, as if they were born together.

He released his first album in 2008, “Soya” which gives it a marked evolution over Ivorian showbiz and ranking it among the hopes of African Reggae people.

“Il Est Temps” is the title of the second album from 2013.  This CD became International, open to the world.  It talks about denunciation, revolution, and education.  This album has become an explosion factor for our General Tchefary.

In 2015 he was invited by K-Bass Music to America to promote African Root Reggae.  General Tchefary is multi-dimensional in his art, he sings with K-Bass Music, Solidarite Sympa, Dub Society and other bands.

He has performed at festivals with famous singers, Ky-Mani Marley, Morgan Heritage, Alpha Blondy, Third World, I Threes, Tiken Jah Fakoly, Takana Zion and many more.

Kannu Collection

It all started with love. Single mother and entreprenuer, Brandice Taylor-Davis, developed the concept for Kannu Collection – a line of African-inspired bags, accessories and clothing to honor her daughter’s African lineage – she is Mandingo. Kannu is the Mandingo word for love.
All of our pieces are handmade in limited quantities in Brooklyn, NY and the materials to make it are sourced from local and small businesses. Our designs are equal parts uniqueness, functionality, and tradition.

Welcome To Aisha Qabila

https://www.itsaishaqabila.com/
Home of Handmade Headties &                   Accessories

My name is Aisha Jawara. I am the CEO and founder of Aisha Qabila, an African fashion line focused on handmade adjustable head ties. Aisha Qabila was an ideal fashion gig that I came up with during the summer of 2015. Aisha Qabila means Aisha is trying to create something in my narrative language, Soninke. Out of all the diverse modes of women’s clothing, the head tie stood out to me the most hence it screams out the dignity, strength, and pride of women. The unique ways of wearing it without any form of judgment were astonishing. So I thought, why not start a handmade head tie line. I started my line of a fitable head tie with different colors and textures. This is because I want the women to have a product that will build up their self-esteem, sense of beauty, and self-love. You do not need hair to be considered beautiful. I’m starting this fashion line of head ties to increase the awareness of all the ethnic beauty that continues to exist in the diverse world we live in. That being said, this was just an idea that has now become a reality, and I hope you enjoy my products as well as to support my mission for the empowerment of women.

Vivere! pronounced (vi-ve-re) meaning: TO LIVE!
Vivere is not only the name of the company but the very premise the company is founded on. In a world where distraction and despair can easily consume your day, we choose to celebrate life and live it on our own terms. This coupled with our love for amazing chocolate has lead us here. We worked with seasoned chocolatiers to develop a line of confections that we are proud to bring to you. It is said that time is the one true luxury and we believe there’s always time for chocolate.
Our artisanal chocolates are handmade using a premium blend of all natural, 70% chocolate and fresh cream ganaches, which are crafted out of a blend of cacao beans from Africa, Central America, and South America.
