About the African Services Committee:
African Services Committee is dedicated to improving the health and self-sufficiency of the African community in New York City and beyond. African Services Committee, or ASC, accomplishes its mission by empowering immigrants and refugees of the African Diaspora through advocacy, policy change and provision of health, housing, educational, legal, and social services in New York and Africa.
Welcoming newcomers, embracing those who are disadvantaged and building community lays the foundation of ASC’s work.
Founded in 1981 by an Ethiopian refugee, ASC is a service and advocacy organization based in Harlem, New York. Dedicated to improving the quality of life and self-sufficiency of African immigrant communities in New York, ASC operates a comprehensive community care program serving more than 10,000 people annually. Its client base includes African Diaspora immigrants affected by war, poverty, global health disparities, political oppression, and social persecution based on sexual orientation or HIV status. The organization has also grown to address the devastating impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Ethiopia through direct service, prevention education and treatment advocacy.
