The Black Institute is an action-tank, a think tank that takes action. We do our work through one perspective, the perspective of Black people and people of color throughout the Diaspora. The Black Institute has two goals: the first goal is to be the premiere organization conducting research; making, shaping and influencing public policy, the second goal is to build a nationally recognized leadership training center focused on community and political organizing for people of color. We will use three strategies to reach our goals…Knowledge, Community and Leadership.  The Knowledge strategy consists of data gathering, research and polling. Through the Community strategy we will conduct issue-based campaigns and community organizing. Finally through the Leadership strategy, the Institute will conduct leadership training and development.  Lastly, our work will be around four specific areas of focus: Education, Environmental Justice, Economic Fairness and Immigration.
The Black Institute was incorporated in 2010 and received designation as a 501c3 in February, 2011. The Black Institute is the fulfillment of the vision of its founder Bertha Lewis who has been a community organizer for over twenty-five years because of her belief in the need for an institute conducting intellectual research and combining that research with advocacy, action and innovative leadership training.
The Black Institute believes that for too long, the Black perspective has been without a voice, and has generally been viewed as a minority perspective. As the demographics of the United States change, our nation is becoming majority-minority. With this demographic shift, it is crucial that the paradigm of public debate shift to be fully inclusive of a Black perspective.
Over the last six years, TBI has played a leading role in raising the voices of blacks in the fight for economic justice and immigrant rights locally and abroad —  from advocating for low wage workers in Caribbean nations, to targeting corporations that exploit blacks to addressing high rates of unemployment and an inadequate education system. Blacks have been an easy target for low wage employers eager to exploit those desperate to find work and TBI campaigns have highlighted the unique struggles of low wage workers and immigrants.
